EIN for Venmo Business: Do You Need One?
A Venmo business profile accepts either a Social Security Number or an EIN. If you run an LLC or corporation, use the entity's EIN. If you are a sole proprietor, an SSN works — but an EIN keeps it off the platform's records.

A Venmo business profile can be set up with either a Social Security Number or an EIN. If you operate through an LLC or corporation, supply the entity's EIN — the entity earns the income, not you personally. If you are a sole proprietor, an SSN is accepted, but an EIN keeps that number out of the platform's records and costs $0 from the IRS. Venmo issues Form 1099-K when goods-and-services payments exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions.
Venmo business profiles let sellers, freelancers, and small operators take customer payments on an app most US consumers already have. Venmo is owned by PayPal and runs on the same tax reporting infrastructure, so the rules match closely — see EIN for a PayPal business account for the sister product. The tax ID question is the same one every payment platform raises: whose number identifies the recipient of the money. This guide covers which number to use, what Venmo reports, and how a sole proprietor gets an EIN without forming anything.
| Factor | Detail |
|---|---|
| EIN required? | No — SSN accepted from a sole proprietor |
| EIN required for an LLC or corporation | Yes — the entity receives the income |
| Form Venmo issues | 1099-K |
| Federal 1099-K threshold | $20,000 and more than 200 transactions |
| Is income below the threshold taxable? | Yes |
| Owned by | PayPal |
| IRS fee for an EIN | $0 |
Which Number
Should You Use an SSN or an EIN on Venmo Business?
It follows the entity. Whoever legally earns the money supplies the tax ID, and Venmo reports the payments against that number.
| Your Situation | Which Number | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sole proprietor, no entity | SSN or EIN | Either is accepted; the EIN is more private |
| Single-member LLC | The LLC's EIN | The LLC receives the income |
| Multi-member LLC or partnership | The entity's EIN | The partnership files its own return |
| Corporation | The corporation's EIN | The corporation is the taxpayer |
Getting this wrong creates a reporting mismatch. If your LLC does the work and issues the invoices, but Venmo reports the payments against your personal SSN, the IRS sees income attributed to you individually while your LLC's records show it as business revenue. Untangling that at filing time is avoidable by supplying the right number at setup.
The EIN vs SSN guide covers the distinction in full, and what you can do with an EIN lists the platforms that accept one.
Changing the number later is possible but tedious. Venmo asks you to update the tax information on the profile, and the change applies going forward rather than retroactively — payments already received in the year remain reported against the number that was on file when they settled. A seller who forms an LLC mid-year can therefore end up with one 1099-K against an SSN and another against the EIN, both belonging on the same return. Supplying the right number from the start avoids splitting a single year of revenue across two tax IDs.
Reporting
What Does Venmo Report to the IRS?
Goods-and-services payments, on Form 1099-K, once they exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions in a calendar year. Personal transfers between friends are not business income and are not reported.
A figure of $600 has circulated widely for several years. That lower threshold was legislated but repeatedly delayed and never took effect, so it does not apply. Individual states operate their own reporting programmes with lower thresholds, which is why some sellers receive a form without meeting the federal test.
Two points matter more than the number itself:
Taxability does not depend on the form. A seller who took $7,000 through Venmo across 60 transactions receives no 1099-K and still owes tax on $7,000 of gross receipts, less allowable expenses. The threshold governs Venmo's obligation to report, not yours to pay.
Keep business and personal separate. Venmo distinguishes goods-and-services payments from friend transfers, and the 1099-K covers only the former. Running business revenue through a personal profile breaks that distinction, violates the user agreement, and leaves you with revenue that is taxable but undocumented.

Mistakes
What Do Venmo Business Sellers Get Wrong?
Four errors account for most of the trouble, and each one shows up either at tax time or when an account gets limited.
Taking business payments on a personal profile. This is the most common and the most costly. Venmo’s user agreement does not permit it, the account can be limited or closed with funds held, and the revenue arrives with no 1099-K and no clean record. Sellers usually do it to avoid the small transaction fee on business payments, which is a poor trade against losing account access.
Supplying an SSN when an LLC earns the money. The payments then report against you personally while your books record them as business revenue. The mismatch surfaces when the IRS matches 1099-K totals to returns.
Assuming no form means no tax. Most Venmo sellers never reach $20,000 and 200 transactions, receive nothing, and conclude the income is invisible. It is fully taxable and fully traceable through your bank deposits.
Not reconciling the 1099-K to actual revenue. A 1099-K reports gross payments before fees, refunds, and chargebacks. Reporting the gross figure as your income overstates it; ignoring the form understates it. Reconcile the two and deduct the fees separately.
A fifth issue affects sellers who use several platforms: each issues its own 1099-K against the same EIN, and all of them belong on one return. See EIN for a PayPal business account and EIN for Stripe.
Comparison
How Does Venmo Compare to Other Platforms?
The tax ID rules are consistent across payment platforms. What differs is who each one serves and whether a non-resident can use it at all.
| Platform | Accepts EIN? | Reports On | Works for Non-Residents? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venmo Business | Yes | Form 1099-K | Rarely — needs US identity verification |
| PayPal Business | Yes | Form 1099-K | Yes, with a US entity and EIN |
| Stripe | Yes | Form 1099-K | Yes, with a US entity and EIN |
| Shopify Payments | Yes | Form 1099-K | Yes, with a US entity and EIN |
Venmo is the outlier for international sellers. It is built around US consumer identity verification and a US bank account, which a non-resident generally cannot satisfy personally. A non-resident with a US LLC and an EIN has a far better experience with PayPal or Stripe, both of which are designed to onboard foreign-owned US entities.
Whichever platform you use, one EIN covers all of them. A business has a single EIN, and you supply that same number everywhere a Form W-9 is requested. There is no per-platform tax ID, and applying for a second EIN because you added a second payment processor leaves one entity holding two numbers — a problem that takes IRS correspondence to unwind.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Venmo business profile require an EIN?
No. Venmo accepts a Social Security Number from a sole proprietor. An LLC or corporation supplies its EIN instead, because the entity rather than the individual receives the payments. Many sole proprietors get an EIN anyway to keep the SSN private.
Does Venmo report to the IRS?
Yes. Venmo issues Form 1099-K when gross payments for goods and services exceed $20,000 across more than 200 transactions in a year. Payments below that threshold are still taxable income; the form governs reporting, not liability.
What is the difference between Venmo personal and Venmo business?
A business profile is built to accept customer payments: it carries a public profile, accepts payments from people who are not friends, and reports goods-and-services payments on Form 1099-K. A personal account is for reimbursing friends and is not for business revenue.
Can I use one EIN for Venmo and PayPal?
Yes. One business entity has one EIN, and you supply that same number to every platform. Venmo is owned by PayPal, so the two share tax reporting infrastructure, but you do not need separate tax IDs for them.
Should I use my SSN or EIN on Venmo Business?
Use the EIN if you have an LLC or corporation, because the entity earns the income. If you are a sole proprietor, either works. An EIN is preferable because it keeps your SSN out of the platform's systems, and the IRS charges nothing for one.
Can I get an EIN for Venmo without forming an LLC?
Yes. A sole proprietor can apply for an EIN without registering any entity. Enter your own legal name on Form SS-4 Line 1 and select Sole Proprietor as the entity type. The IRS issues the number free, instantly online for a US applicant.
Can I take business payments on a personal Venmo account?
Venmo's user agreement does not permit business transactions on a personal account, and doing so risks limits or closure. It also creates a reporting mismatch, since a personal account is not set up to issue the 1099-K your business income requires.
Can a non-US resident open a Venmo business profile?
Venmo requires a US bank account and US identity verification, which most non-residents cannot satisfy personally. A non-resident with a US LLC and an EIN has better results with platforms built for that case. See our guides on Stripe and PayPal for the usual routes.
